Hyderabad: Fake 'bank staffer' held for fraud
Hyderabad: A 19-year-old mobile shop owner from Jharkhand who cheated gullible victims by impersonating as a bank official and robbed them of their money was arrested by Hyderabad Cyber Crime police on Thursday. The accused was identified as Mahendra Kumar Mandal.
According to police, Mahendra would call the victims over their mobile phone and collect debit card details posing as a bank official using false names. He would say that he needed the details for renewing their debit card. After transferring the amount from the victim’s account, he, along with his friends, would spend the same shopping in various cities in Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Using the same procedure, Mahendra managed to trap a Bowenpally resident, Ch Shankar and robbed him to the tune of Rs 1.69 lakh. Mahendra called the victim and identified himself as the manager of Andhra Bank to collect his debit card details and also the OTP that was sent to the victim’s mobile number.
“When the victim received the OTP on his mobile, Mahendra told him that was the pin number of his new debit card which will be sent to his residence,” investigating officials said. Based on the bank account details and the call data record, police arrested Mahendra and recovered Rs 2,900 cash and four mobile phones from him apart from a debit card.
Extortion bid: three nabbed
Three members were arrested for extorting money in the guise of ads from the endowment department. Mahankali police station arrested Kumar, Vishveshwar Rao and Laxman Rao who run local magazines on Wednesday for extorting money from the endowment department in the name of ads.
Laxman Rao, 47, who is a resident of Balanagar, runs a magazine called Alaya Darshini. The second accused, Vishveshwar Rao, 48, a resident of Kavadiguda runs a magazine Praja Mitra while a 62-year-old resident of Jeedimetla Kumar is the editor of Devalaya Charitra magazine.
Station House Officer Mahankali B. Ramesh said, “They demanded advertisements from the endowment department Recently, they also demanded Rs 25,000 from a woman from Mahankali temple. She refused to pay. In January they tried to blackmail some women by releasing a pamphlet against them”.
A case has been registered against them.
2 snatchers’ gangs held
West Zone police arrested two chain snatching gangs consisting two members each and recovered three bikes and eight tolas of gold chains from their possession, all worth around Rs 4 lakh.
DCP West Zone A Venkateswar Rao said that Mohammed Talha Ahmed and Mohammed Shakeer were arrested by Golconda Police. In another case reported in SR nagar police station, Kunal Mishra and Vikram Kumar hailing from Bihar were arrested.
