2 jailed for cutting down neem tree

The inspector said “Venugopal has been growing a Neem tree in front of his house for the last 20 years.

Hyderabad: Two persons working in an MNC in the city were convicted for assaulting their neighbour who complained to the forest department officials after the duo cut down a 20-year-old tree in front of his house. A local court has directed the duo to undergo one-day imprisonment in the case booked against them by the Meerpet police.

According to Meerpet inspector, N. Yadaiah, on Tuesday morning, they received a complaint from one Venugopal, a resident of Om Sai Nagar, stating that his neighbours Srinivas Reddy and Giri have assaulted him for complaining to the forest department officials.

The inspector said “Venugopal has been growing a Neem tree in front of his house for the last 20 years. During his absence, his neighbours, Srinivas Reddy and Giri, both software employees, cut down the tree. Following this, Venugopal complained to the forest department officials and they have fined the duo for cutting down a tree without permission. Enraged with this, the duo assaulted the complainant.”

A petty case was registered against the duo and they were produced in the court which jailed the duo for one day and penalised them with Rs 750 each on Thursday, he said.
