Sewage plant deaths: Eight arrested

Bengaluru: Eight members of an apartment association were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the death of three men while cleaning a clogged sewage treatment plant (STP) tank on Sunday.

The arrested have been identified as T.R. Parameshwar, 68, Pradeep Dasan K., 44, Nitin K., 40, S. Narasimhaprasad, 37, Satyajit Ravat, 41, Hrishikesh Nambiar, 37, L. Fernandis, 41, and Mahendra Srivastava, 41.
They have been booked under IPC section 304 (death due to negligence).
According to the police, the trio, identified as Narayanaswamy, (35), the STP in-charge at the apartment, Srinivas, (56), a painter by profession and Madegowda, (42), an electrician at a garment factory, was asked to manually clean the STP tank.
They got into the 12-feet deep pit and felt suffocated due to toxic gases and lack of oxygen.
While Narayanaswamy and Srinivas died in the tank itself, Madegowda succumbed while being shifted to a hospital, after he was rescued by the fire and emergency personnel.
The Bandepalya police have registered a case.
