People lose' Rs 15 lakh to vishing calls: Rachakonda police
Hyderabad: Rachakonda police on Monday said that people under its limits have lost more than Rs 15 lakh due to fraudulent calls purportedly from bank staff in the last two months.
Cyber Crime Police, however, could retrieve 97 per cent of the amount lost to cyber fraudsters.
Cybercrime inspector Md Riyazuddin said all 24 victims, who fell prey to vishing calls, approached the police within 24 hours of losing the money. On an average, each customer lost around Rs 60,000 from their bank accounts. While a farmer from Bhongir had lost 2.10 lakh and a housewife from Ghatkesar lost rs 2.68 lakh to the scamsters.
Vishing is a fraudulent practice of making phone calls or leaving voice messages purporting to be from a reputable company for inducing individuals to reveal personal financial information.
The inspector said that any person, who falls prey to the vishing call and loses his amount, must approach the police as early as possible.
“Initially, we freeze the scamsters accounts and get it reverted. This will be a great relief to the victim. Tracing the suspect is also an important job for us so that he will not trap others in the same way.” he said.
With the increasing number of vishing calls in Rachakonda, police issued an alert asking people to be cautious of vishing calls.
