The gang robbed many old people in Hyderabad and Vijayawada by diverting their attention posing as GHMC employees.

Hyderabad: Punjagutta police arrested a four member Tamil Nadu based gang for attention diversion thefts. The gang used to pose as GHMC employees who replace drainage pipelines and dupe elderly people. Police seized 50 tola gold ornaments, bikes, four mobile phones and Rs 30,000 from them.

The gang robbed many old people in Hyderabad and Vijayawada by diverting their attention posing as GHMC employees.

The arrested men are Ganesh Dorai Swamy, 40, a labourer at a cement shop and a resident of Vellore, S. Sasi Kumar, 23, a student from Chittor, Ravi Muni Sami alias Ravi, 41, a farmer from Vellore, Nagaraju Govind, 28, a car driver, also from Vellore. One Govind is absconding.

The gang moves on two bikes with fake number plates and select independent houses with aged residents. “Two of them approach the residents posing as GHMC employees who replace drainage pipelines. If they see young people in the house they pretend to note down the details of drainage pipelines and go to the next house to find targets.”

Once a target is identified they introduce themselves as GHMC employees, divert the attention of the old residents saying that a new drainage line has been sanctioned for their houses and they have come to take measurements and check whether they have paid property tax. They also ask for Aadhaar card and property tax details.

Meanwhile, Ganesh takes measurements of the drainage pipeline and Sasi writes down figures in a register and diverts the attention of the inmates. While the duo are at it, two others keep watch. Ravi enters the house and steals cash, gold ornaments and other valuables,” said west zone DCP A. Venkateshwar Rao.

The police has warned the public to be alert if anyone approach them claiming to be GHMC employees who want to do drainage pipeline work or any other work and ask for identity cards. The police said that they should verify identities by calling the concerned department offices.
