Karaparamba councillor's office burnt

Only a portion of the building was burnt although important documents have been destroyed.

KOZHIKODE: The office of Karaparamba councillor Navya Haridas (BJP) was burnt by miscreants late on Sunday night and almost all important documents kept there were charred, said the councillor. It was on July 31 that Navya had started a separate office for the smooth functioning of the ward she represents. From preliminary investigation, it was clear that the miscreants broke open the shutter of the office and burnt the documents and television kept inside.

Only a portion of the building was burnt although important documents have been destroyed. Nadakkavu police registered a case of mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house. SI G. Gopakumar said it was too early to conclude that the incident was based on political rivalry, as the area is not a politically sensitive one.

The office was earlier the storeroom of an individual, who gave it free to the councillor to work and interact with the public. Close to the Nellikavu temple, there is an RSS sakha also functioning near the office. People coming to the Sakha in the early morning noticed that the name board of the office was missing and smoke was coming out. A portion of the board was later found in the nearby Kanoli Canal.

“There could be a reason for political rivalry, due to the growing support I am getting from all parties after the ‘Waste-free ward’ project was started on July 24. People from all parties personally congratulated me over the project and in the next week, the office was opened. The miscreants wanted to specifically destroy the documents and valuables. There was a sack on the LED TV that was burnt. All the documents were collected together on the table before burning them,” said Ms Navya.
