Hyderabad: A gold consignment of around 150 kg gold was detained at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport by customs officials due to lapses in the required paperwork.
The officials, however, did not confirm the quantity of gold and also refuted that it was related to tax evasion.
“The incident had taken place about two weeks ago. Two consignments of gold arrived at the RGIA in the air cargo. One of the consignments was released by the unit, but another consignment was halted for release due to the lapses in the paperwork,” a customs official said.
The officials also add that the gold was a proper import and was not seized. “After due verification of the paperwork, further necessary action will be initiated.”
In two separate instances, officials have seized 767.77 gm gold from two air passengers.
In an incident during wee hours on Monday, a Sudanese national who attempted to smuggle gold from Dubai to Hyderabad was held by the Air Intelligence Unit officials. The woman was carrying the gold in the form of biscuits in her undergarments. In another incident, an air passenger who arrived in an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi. The passenger had concealed 574.07 gm of gold worth Rs 19.63 lakh in a juicer, Bluetooth speaker, watch and as a bangle.
