Hyderabad: An 18-year-old girl impregnated by her step-mother’s maternal uncle succumbed to her depression and committed suicide at her house in Meerpet on Tuesday night. The Meerpet police on Wednesday booked a case against the accused, Mallesh, on grounds of rape, cheating, and abetment to murder, and took him into custody for questioning.
The victim Kavitha (name changed), a native of Miryalaguda, was living with her step-mother in Prashanth Nagar under Meerpet police limits. The step-mother’s maternal uncle, Mallesh, 35, a labourer hailing from a village near Miryalaguda and a father of two kids, lured Kavitha under the pretext of love and impregnated her. The girl was seven months pregnant at the time of death.
“Mallesh’s family held a panchayat at the village to figure out a solution and subsequently paid Rs 1.5 lakh to have the child aborted and to get the victim married to someone else. In return, they expected them to not take the matter to the police,” shared Sreenu, uncle of the victim.
On Tuesday, when she was alone Kavitha hung herself off the ceiling. She was rushed to a private hospital and then to Osmania General Hospital, where she succumbed.
