Karnataka: Woman kills husband, seeks his property

The six-year-old murder came to light when the accused, Parvati, demanded her husband's share of property.

Belagavi: The Belagavi police recently arrested a woman on charges of killing her husband with the help of her paramour over six years ago. The murder of Basavaraj Junjari of Bailhongal came to light only when his wife, Prabhavati alias Parvati (30) of Shibargatti, Dharwad, came asking for his share of property from his brothers. The police have also arrested Parvati’s paramour and the others involved in the crime.

Parvati and Basavaraj got married in 1997 and shifted to Dharwad in 2000 at the insistence of Parvati. Soon after, she started an extramarital affair with Mallangouda Mallangoudar (36) from Karadiguddi, near Dharwad. They even got married in secret. Basvaraj, who came to know about the affair, started pestering Parvati to end her shenanigans and move back with him to Bailhongal.

That is when Parvati and Mallanagouda hatched a plan to murder Basavaraj. They roped in Mallanagouda’s brothers too into the criminal conspiracy. On April 10, 2011, they took Basavaraj to a graveyard at in Dharwad and clubbed him to death using stones. They burnt the body and destroyed all evidence. Since then, no one was aware of the whereabouts of Basavaraj. Quite unbelievably, Parvati came to Basavaraj's hometown near Dharwad and demanded from his brothers that she be given Basavaraj’s share of the property.

His brothers were shocked when she said that she was unaware of Basavaraj's whereabouts. She told them that she left Basavaraj at his hometown six years ago. The brothers grew suspicious and filed a missing complaint with Belagavi police. During interrogation she told them that she murdered Basavraj six years ago.
