Chennai: In separate incidents in neighbouring districts of Chennai, 70 sovereigns of jewellery were stolen. This included theft from a pawn broker’s shop near Maduranthagam in Kancheepuram district. They decamped with jewellery after making a hole in the wall of the shop located along the Chennai-Trichy highway, sources said. On Thursday morning the owner Anand, found many items missing from the showcase. On inspecting the area, he found that a hole had been made in the wall through which the burglars gained entry.

Padalam police rushed to the scene and took fingerprints from the scene. “The area behind the shop is infested with bushes and acted as perfect cover for the robbers. They must have made their way into the store after midnight,” a police officer said. Police are persuing the CCTV footage from the neighbourhood. Around 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery, three kilograms of silver articles, cash were stolen from the shop, sources said.

A day ago in Gummidipoondi, 40 km from the city, burglars broke into a house in Balakrishnapuram off the bypass road and escaped with 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery. The house owner, Dakshinamoorthy (44) runs a two-wheeler dealership in the bazaar area in Gummidipoondy.  On Tuesday, all the family members were asleep on the ground floor when the theft happened.
