University of Hyderabad student jumps off hostel building

Birbal, who is currently undergoing treatment in Care Hospital, Gachibowli, is out of danger.

HYDERABAD: Birbal Debbarma, a 20-year-old student of IMA language science in the University of Hyderabad reportedly attempted suicide in the wee hours of Tuesday by jumping from the third floor of his hostel. The student went out of his room in L Hostel in the south campus of the university after 12 am and went to room number 308 from where he jumped at around 1 am. Birbal, who is currently undergoing treatment in Care Hospital, Gachibowli, is out of danger but will be unable to walk for more than three months.

“He has fractured his right leg bone and his right side pelvis. But his ribs have been spared. Subarachnoid haemorrhage is present which is bleeding in the space between the brain and the tissue covering the brain but an MRI will be conducted only on Wednesday,” said a doctor. “There were eyewitnesses to the incident. The students said that the grills of the window had been removed since a long time. They tried to stop him but he was mentally depressed. There was no foul play involved,” said N. Venkateshwarlu, insp-ector incharge of Gachibowli. No suicide note has been found. However, the police said that they suspect a love angle behind the tragic incident.

Birbal’s roommate said, “He shared the lyrics of a song titled, ‘I feel like my life ain’t mine, who can relate’ on a Facebook post the day he decided to take this drastic step. He was probably feeling frustrated. I was not present in the room when he left.” Around 1:30 am, students of L hostel heard the screams. They notified the ambulance on campus.

Unni M, a student said, “The facility of the ambulance for the students in south campus is bad. After we waited for more than ten minutes, I took him on my bike along with my friend. It was difficult as he was injured but we had no choice.” A resident of Tripura, Birbal’s parents have been notified and will reach here on Wednesday. An attempt to suicide case has been booked against the student. The cost of the usrgery required is estimated around 5 lakhs. The student community of UoH is colledcting money required to conduct the surgery. M. Nandalal Debbarma, deputy engineer, BHEL who is Birbal’s local guardian, has been informed by the police.
