Kalburgi murder: CID hopes to get vital leads

Dr Kalburgi case bears similarities with Dr Dabholkar and Mr Pansare murder cases.

BENGALURU: With the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chargesheeting ENT specialist and member of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti member Virendrasing Tawade in the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune in August 2013, there’s a “strong” possibility that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) may get some “good” leads from Tawade in the murder case of Kannada scholar M.M. Kalburgi after they obtain his transit remand from a court in Kolhapur, said an official source.

A CID team has reportedly left for Kolhapur to obtain the transit remand of Tawade, who is currently in police custody and is being interrogated in the murder case of the CPI member Govind Pansare by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The police custody of Tawade ends on September 8. Soon after his arrest by the CBI in June, the CID had applied for his custody, but had to wait because the SIT, Kolhapur had applied earlier to the court for his custodial interrogation.

According to the CBI, the motive for the murder of Dr Dabholkar was allegedly the “long enmity/hatred that existed between two private organisations. Dr Dabholkar was the founder of a Satara (Maharashtra) based organisation and the accused (doctor) was part of another other private organisation based in Kolhapur. The accused (Tawade) doctor gave up his medical profession in 2001 and began to actively propagate the activities of the said Kolhapur-based private organisation through his associates. The activities of persons alleged to be against the interests of the Jodhpur organisation got targeted and Dr Dabholkar was an important target,” said sources in the CBI.

Dr Kalburgi case bears similarities with Dr Dabholkar and Mr Pansare murder cases. Mr Pansare was killed in February last year in Kolhapur, when he had gone out for morning walk with his wife. The CBI has charged Tawade with criminal conspiracy in the Dabholkar case under Sections of 120-B (criminal conspiracy) read with 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
