Hyderabad: Police have registered a case against Sarangi Madhu and Dr Girija Rani for abetting an abortion in the course of which the pregnant woman died.
Malluri Harika, 19, from Sangareddy district, a second year engineering student living in a hostel in Vanasthalipuram, fell in love with a distant relative, Sarangi Madhu, 21, 18 months ago. He apparently proposed to her and they began a physical relationship.
A few days ago, they found that Harika was pregnant but as they were not married and as their families did not know about the relationship, they wanted to get rid of the pregnancy. After making enquiries in different hospitals, they found Anusha Clinic in Kamalanagar in Vanasthalipuram, where Dr Girija Rani agreed to perform the abortion for Rs 20,000. Harika was admitted to the hospital on Saturday night and the abortion was performed on Sunday. After the abortion, Harika started bleeding heavily and later slipped into unconsciousness.

“As her condition worsened, doctors advised that she be shifted to Osmania Hospital, but as her condition worsened, Madhu took her to another private hospital close by, in Dilsukhnagar, where doctors declared she was already dead,” said SI Vijay Kumar from Vanasthalipuram police station.
Harika’s family claim that Madhu had been harassing Harika and forced her to accept his proposal. However, they were not aware that the two were in a relationship.
Based on a complaint from Harika’s father, a case has been registered against Madhu and Dr Girija Rani under Section 312 (causing miscarriage), Section 314, (death caused by act done with intent to cause miscarriage) and Section 417 (cheating) of the IPC.
“We are also writing to the health department for further inquiry into the case and if the hospital has all requisite permissions,” the SI said.
Anusha Clinic has been in operation for over 20 years and is known for its services in the surrounding areas.
