Telangana: Youth ends life, blames cricket betting in video

Uncle, brothers, other family members and relatives please don't get involved in betting.

Hyderabad: In a video clip he made before committing suicide, 19-year-old Basupalli Vijay, who was involved in cricket betting, said that betting destroys lives. Nobody should fall into the trap.

In the 14-second video, Vijay is seen saying, “Nobody should be involved in betting. I am committing suicide because of betting. Uncle, brothers, other family members and relatives please don’t get involved in betting.” He did not mention how much money he has lost or how much he owed.

Vijay is the only son of a farming couple Bikshapathi and Pochamma from Dontapally village in Shankarpally mandal, Vikarabad district. He had dropped out of his Intermediate course and was living with his parents.

On Sunday, he asked his mother for some money, but she said she had no money to give him. He left the house and when Bikshapathi went to his field that afternoon, he found Vijay hanging from a tree in the field.

His parents told the police that Vijay was depressed because they did not give him money. A case of suspicious death was registered. On Friday, the video clip went viral and a policeman from Shankarpally police station saw it.

The police are now investigating the betting angle. They suspect that Vijay shared the video with someone who is yet to be identified and from that person it was circulated in the village. “We analysed his mobile phone, but did not find the video clip. We are verifying his call data records for clues which could have led him to take the extreme step,” Shankarpally SI K Kranthi Kumar said.

Earlier, in June, 27-year-old Ghan Shyam, a kirana merchant from Jeedimetla hanged himself after losing huge amounts of money betting on cricket matches.
