Two Rohingyas arrested for cheating locals

They recently came to Hyderabad and were residing in Camp No. 9 at Balapur and were working on daily wages.

Hyderabad: Two Rohingya nationals who collected money from locals under the guise of helping Rohingyas back home but used the money for themselves were arrested by the Rachakonda police at Balapur on Thursday. The duo uploaded a short video on social media and used it to raise money.

The duo, Mohd Ayub, 39, and Ahmad Noor, 32, both hold United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards, said DCP, LB Nagar, M. Venkateswar Rao.

The DCP said Ayub and Noor sneaked into India illegally through Bangladesh by paying money to mediators. They recently came to Hyderabad and were residing in Camp No. 9 at Balapur and were working on daily wages.

As their income was not sufficient, they hatched a plan to extract money from locals. They uploaded a short video on social media platforms and shared it widely, with an appeal to donate money for the cause of Rohingya Muslims. They also furnished bank account details for donors to transfer money. The account belonged to their employer Ashraf Moinuddin.

The duo used the money to fund their lifestyle, police said. Based on a tip off, cops nabbed them and upon inquiry, they confessed. Police seized Rs 33,400, in cash, a gold chain, mobile phones and other material from their possession.
