Hyderabad woman who killed newborn son wanted to save her child: Police
Hyderabad: D. Poornima, 28, who allegedly killed her 23-day-old son, was mentally sound when she committed the offence. Police said that Poornima, who was a graduate, was worried as her family was planning to get her sterilised after a few months as she had become weak after delivering her son.
Though she slit her son’s throat with a blade, after seeing blood she wanted to save him. Saying that she was taking him to hospital to treat for vomiting, she left home with the child. Police arrested Poornima on Thursday for murder and concealing evidence and produced her before court.
Malkajgiri DCP E. Ramachandra Reddy said that after her marriage to D Sridhar, a bangle store merchant, nine years ago, Poornima was expecting a girl, gave birth to a premature baby and the child died after a few months. Later, she again gave birth to a boy, who is now four years old and healthy.
During the third pregnancy she hoped for a daughter and became depressed when she had a boy again. As the delivery was surgical she became weak. On Tuesday evening Poornima decided to kill her son and slit his throat using a shaving blade.
On seeing blood she wrapped him in a towel and started for a hospital. “Her mother-in-law Prameela who stays on the first floor saw Poornima going out and when she asked Poornima said the kid was vomiting and she was taking him to hospital,” Mr Ramachandra Reddy said.
On way to hospital she informed her husband. He rushed to the spot and both went to hospital where doctors declared the child dead.
Later, she made up a story that she was robbed by two youths who attacked her son and snatched her gold chain and lodged a complaint. Police who suspected her, grilled her.
“To convince everyone she hid her mangalsutra in a medicine box and gave it to Sridhar’s brother-in-law and told to keep the box with him. She also washed the child’s blood-stained shirt,” Mr Ramach-andra Reddy added.
After checking facts, police concluded that Poornima killed her infant son.
