Probe finds police tortured Dalit realtor

Nalgonda SP Ranganath told Deccan Chronicle that an inquiry was underway

Hyderabad: Dozens of police officers including the ones in inspector and sub inspector ranks, who obtained postings through recommendation letters from people’s representatives in Nalgonda district, are allegedly taking law into their hands.

In a torture case in which a Dalit real estate agent R. Srinivas suffered serious injuries, the Nalgonda II town SI Narsimha is said to be now frantically trying to make peace with the victim. He allegedly approached some community leaders in Nalgonda district to mediate with Srinivas.

Nalgonda SP Ranganath told Deccan Chronicle that an inquiry was underway. "The report will be submitted by the inquiry officer on Tuesday. Based on this, we will initiate action on errant police officers," he said.

A day after Ranganath issued orders appointing ASP Satish Chodagiri to inquire into the case, Nalgonda town CI was questioned over the torturing of the real estate agent. Narsimha was temporarily away from duties while the inquiry against him was on.

In a preliminary probe, it was found that two SIs and a constable tortured Srinivas. He was subjected to third- degree torture in a staggered manner. The victim was taken to the police station in the evening. Once every hour, two SIs and a constable tortured Srinivas and this lasted for over 10 hours as per the complaint.

Srinivas became unconscious, as a result, unable to walk. The police called in his family members, asking them to take Srinivas away from the police station.
The medical report stated that his left leg was fractured and he was unable to walk without support. The inquiry team also collected medical reports from the victim and took pictures of his injuries as part of the inquiry.

Narsimha, faced with harsh media criticism, came forward to provide some money to the victim for his medical expenses and requested the family members to withdraw his complaint. The family refused to respond to his requests.
