17 students injured in college bus rollover in Eluru

Parents Accuse College Management of Neglecting Student Safety in Bus Accident

Eluru: A private bus carrying students of Narayana Junior College overturned at a turning in Chodimella village of Eluru mandal on Monday night, injuring 17 students. One student's fingers were crushed in the accident.

The bus was reportedly speeding and the driver is alleged to have been negligent.

Denduluru MLA K. Abbayyi Chowdary visited the spot and helped shift the injured students to the Government Hospital in Eluru.

Eluru Rural sub-inspector R. Raja Reddy told the Deccan Chronicle that the bus driver was driving rashly and negligently. However, he said that the students suffered only minor injuries and two students were admitted to a private hospital. The remaining students were treated at Eluru Hospital. A case has been registered by Eluru Rural Police.

The MLA expressed anger over the negligence of the college management and sought an explanation from them. He questioned why they did not take action against the driver despite his speeding habits.

The college management told the MLA that the students had not brought the issue to their notice.

The MLA then called the district collector and suggested that he appoint a committee to review the condition of school buses and the safety of students in the college. He also called for necessary action to be taken against the management.

Parents of the injured students also questioned the management about the bus condition, the driver's negligence, and the accident. They alleged that the management does not take care of the safety of the students and that the college officials are only interested in collecting fees.

Some of the students were discharged from the hospital after treatment.
A parent named K. Nagaraju said that many parents had questioned the management about the accident and their safety. He said that the management had promised to bear the medical expenses of the students, if necessary. He also said that the college officials had promised to take proper steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
