Man carrying gold powder' held at Coimbatore airport

The powdered gold was found to weigh 750 grams.

Coimbatore: A 31-year-old man who smuggled gold in powder form along with medicine by wrapping it a fake bandage was secured by the Coimbatore customs officials on Monday. According to a customs official, based on a tip off, Customs officials at Coimbatore airport maintained a continuous surveillance in the early hours of Monday. A passenger, who arrived here by an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah in the wee hours, was found to have bandages on both his legs below the knee. Smelling a rate, the officials made him undergo a special metal detector test which confirmed he was carrying gold in power form.

During interrogation, the passenger, whose name was given as Abdul Kareem, 31, from Malapuram district in Kerala, admitted to the crime, said sources. The powdered gold was found to weigh 750 grams. In a similar incident, a 29-year old youth from Malapuram district in Kerala was held couple of days ago by Coimbatore customs officials for smuggling in gold bars from Sharjah by concealing them in his rectum.
