Tamil Nadu: High-value burglary after techie's wedding

Rs 75 Lakh gold, Rs 5.5 looted from house in broad daylight.

Chennai: In all, 300 sovereigns of gold worth over Rs 75 lakh and Rs 5.5 lakh were burgled during day time from a house, which hosted a wedding of a US based techie on Sunday, on Wednesday when the inmates were attending US visa work in Nungambakkam.

The high-value break in happened in the house of A. Raman, a retired CPWD employee, three days after the wedding of his son Uppili, a software professional working in Chicago. Raman and his wife had taken their son Uppili and his wife to US visa related work in Nungambakkam when the intruders broke open the back door of their house and took away valuables kept in three bureaus.

The family noticed the break in when they returned around 5.30 pm on Wednesday. Immediately police were informed and a team of investigators rushed to the crime scene at CTO Colony to lift fingerprints and started looking for other evidence.

Raman had told the police that the lost gold ornaments belonged to his wife, daughter in law and his two daughters. As the wedding took place only on Sunday everybody had used the ornaments and kept in the bureaus. The cash received as gifts during the wedding was also stolen, he told the police.

According to the police, the theft was a well-planned one. “The timing showed the intruders were aware of the family’s plan to go out. It is also clear that burglars were sure about striking rich, as a wedding had taken place in the house just three days back. We are probing all angles and also trying to see if any CCTV footage is available in the area,” the police said.
