Vakkom murder accused ends life
Thiruvananthapuram: The viral videos of gangsters dragging down Shabeer, 23, from his bike and lynching near the railway crossing at Vakkom had sent shockwaves across the state. Around seven months after the incident, one of the six accused, committed suicide not being able to go through the trauma it brought on him.
The deceased identified as Reju, 26, of Kunjanvilakom House, Vakkom had got bail a month back. Since others in his family were out of state for work, he used to live with his relatives at Kollam after the release. On Monday he returned to his home in the capital and hung himself from the ceiling.
“He used to tell his friends that he will commit suicide before being convicted,” police said. As per the charge sheet prepared by Kadakkavoor police, Shabeer, 23, was lynched by a four-member gang. Reju prevented public from reaching out to help Shabeer by brandishing a wooden log. The visuals of the attack went viral through WhatsApp and police arrested the gang. Reju is the son of Shailaja and late Ramanan, and he also leaves an elder brother.
