2 policemen in civvies try to stop brawl, attacked

Days after Anandan killed in encounter, cops assaulted.

Chennai: Only two days after rowdy Anandan was killed in a police encounter after he and his friends hacked a police constable in Chennai, two police personnel, in civvies were attacked while trying to stop a brawl in Washermenpet, on Thursday night. The police have arrested three persons in connection with the attack.

The incident happened when police constables Nagendiran and Praveen attached to Washermenpet police station went to Muthiyal Mesthri Street in Palaiyavannai to pacify a brawl reported on police control room ‘100’. Chandra (55) of Muthiyal Mesthri Street is said to have leased out her house on the same street to Jamila (35) nearly 12 years ago. Both have been fighting a legal war in the court regarding the house, the police said.

“On Thursday night, Chandra along with her relatives had broken the locks of the house in question and went inside. Knowing this Jamila came to the house and started arguing. Moreover, 20 persons from SDPI party also gathered in support of her,” the police said.

At some point, the argument turned nasty and both side exchanged blows, forcing the onlookers to alert police. “Nagendiran and Praveen arrived at the spot in civil dress and tried to intervene. But Jamila’s four supporters started to attack policemen inflicting injuries on Nagendiran. He was admitted to Stanley government hospital, while Praveen was treated at the outpatient ward in the hospital,” the police said.

Washermenpet police registered a case and arrested B. Neimuddin (31) of Cemetery Road, K. Wasim (26) and S. Amanullah (55) of Muthiyal Mesthri Street in Old Washermenpet. “The arrested persons belong to SDPI,” police said. The police also launched a hunt to arrest another person.
