Kerala: Sorcery suspected in storing body

Local residents say that the family led a secluded life, keeping neighbours away.

MALAPPURAM: Residents of Parammalangadi, an interior village near Kolathur in Moorkanad panchayat, are still wonderstruck since the police recovered the decomposed body of their neighbour Vazhayil Seyd secretly kept inside his bedroom by his wife for months expecting a resurrection. According to neighbours, the family that led a secluded life had no relations with outside world for the past two years. “They had a good rapport with us all since they settled in the village nine years ago. But, we noticed a change in their behaviour two years ago when they came back after a long journey to somewhere else,” says E. Beerankutty who runs a small shop near Seyd’s house.

All the nearby residents share the same opinion about them. They suspect the involvement of someone with a black magic background in the entire episode. The woman had told neighbours not to intervene in their affairs and was not happy with visitors even her own relatives. “There could be someone behind who influenced the women to commit this. Only the police investigation can reveal more,” says Husain K.P., another neighbour who had contact with Seyd two years ago.

"Her 21-year-old son who is a graduate was not in normal condition when I met him last time many months ago," he said. Seyd, an expert in martial arts, had worked in the Gulf for years. He was working as a madrasa teacher in Puthanpalli near Ponnani when he disappeared from the public view. Since the family had no contact with neighbours or relatives, many believed that he might have returned to Gulf. They say he was a diabetic patient and had not consulted doctors as per their knowledge.

A police source said the woman believed to have treated the illness of all in the family only with drinking water she ritualistically prepared (oothiya vellam). She was suspected to be in hallucination and acted based on self-revelations out of the mental disorder. The police had found several cans of drinking water stored in the house. However, they haven’t got any clue about suspected involvement of a god man. “The investigation will also look into that angle. As of now, we haven’t got any evidence to confirm,” Perinthalmanna inspector Saju K. Abraham said. Doctors have confirmed in the autopsy that the death was due to natural causes, police said. Relatives buried the body at Jalaliya Juma Masjid in Kolathur on Thursday.
