Bengaluru: Man shot at by wife recovering
Bengaluru: The unseemly brawl between a drunken couple that ended in a shootout on Hosur Road on Friday night was over a violent disagreement on a choice of groom for their only daughter.
Hamsaveni (38), who shot three rounds at her husband and critically injured him on Friday evening near Veerasandra Gate on Hosur Road following a scuffle between them, told the police on Saturday that she did it as her husband Sairam (44) (in pic) opposed not just her choice of groom but the elaborate arrangements she wanted to make to celebrate their daughter's engagement.
Hamsaveni, who gained consciousness at a hospital, told the police that her husband Sairam had a history of "troubling" her and on Friday had abused her physically inside the car, the trigger for her rage and subsequent shooting.
The couple, who fell in love and got married 27 years ago, were living separately in HSR Layout. While Sairam, who is the CEO of Ace Management and Properties, lived alone, Hamsaveni stayed with their daughter, who is an MBA graduate and runs a pre-nursery school. The couple, who fought frequently, have approached HSR Layout police station on several occasions before.
Hamsaveni told the police that of late, she and Sairam had been quarrelling over finding a suitable groom for their daughter. They decided to meet at a restaurant on Friday as Hamsaveni wanted Sairam to be present when the potential groom's family visited their house on Saturday to see their daughter. But Sairam did not approve of Hamsaveni's selection. The couple, who had had a few drinks, started fighting at the restaurant.
However, the staff intervened and pacified them, except the couple who had got into their car continued their squabble in the car. It reached a flashpoint when Sairam hit Hamsaveni. He got down from the car in a huff, and started walking towards a BMTC bus-stop, saying he would take a bus to reach home when a drunk and furious Hamsaveni pulled out Sairam's loaded gun, which was kept in the glove compartment and shot at him while he was walking towards the bus.
Bystanders said she chased the bus and blocked it as it tried to leave, marched into the bus and was about to shoot him again when the passengers intervened. However this could not be independently verified. Sairam, who suffered three bullet injuries and was admitted to a hospital by shocked bystanders on Hosur Road in a critical condition is recovering. The police are yet to record his statement.
