Chennai: 46-year-old to undergo 10-year RI for wife's murder

She died on October 10. Kasimedu police registered a case and arrested him

Chennai: The VII Additional Sessions Court, Chennai, has sentenced a 46-year-old person to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years on a charge of murdering his wife five years ago. He set herself on fire after pouring kerosene over her in 2013.

According to the prosecution, Saravanan, 41, of Kasimedu was working in a fast food restaurant. Unable to withstand his torture, his first wife, Dharshini, deserted him more than 10 years ago. Concealing his first marriage, he married Mahadevi of Pudukuppam, Cuddalore in 2008.

After consuming alcohol he used to harass Mahadevi regularly. All efforts to change his behaviour failed. On October 5, 2012, at 10.20 am he came home in an inebriated condition and developed heated altercation with Mahadevi.

Angered over this, he poured kerosene over her and set herself on fire. She sustained grievous injuries and admitted to a hospital. Later, she died on October 10. Kasimedu police registered a case and arrested him.

On completion of the trial, Judge N. Vasanthaleela said the prosecution proved the charge. The judge sentenced him to undergo RI for 10 years and imposed a fine of '1,000 on him.
