Telangana police warns of online fundraising email scam

Cybercrime officers said that fraudsters often rely on such emotional content to dupe the public and make a quick buck.

HYDERABAD: If you receive an email seeking a donation towards the treatment of a child suffering from a congenital heart condition, your best bet is to delete it.

Cybercrime officers said that fraudsters often rely on such emotional content to dupe the public and make a quick buck.

Cybercrime cells across the state are flooded with enquiries regarding the authenticity of such emails which talk about families struggling to meet the medical expenses of children.

“All such emails are false. People should mark them as spam and delete them so that similar emails are filtered out in the future. This will also help ensure that email service providers block the email IDs from which such emails originate,” Ram Mohan Rao, SP of the Telangana state CID, said.

Officials said that in some cases, fraudsters have managed to collect huge sums by sending messages through WhatsApp and email.

In August, a man from the city died in an accident in Canada. Within minutes of the news breaking, a fundraising campaign was launched on social media and thousands of dollars were collected.
