Woman professor found murdered in Coimbatore

On Friday morning Latha did not come out of her house for a long time and her neighbor Rani found smoke coming out of the house.

Coimbatore: In a gory incident, a woman professor of a government college was found dead with substantial burn marks and her throat slit in her house in a suburban area on Friday.

Police said the deceased was found burnt badly at her residence at Sulur. Sivalingam, a resident of Sulur IOB colony, works in the technical department in Bharathiar University (BU), his wife Latha, 38, worked as an assistant professor in the Tirupur Government Arts college.

Ms Latha was living alone next to her parents’ house in Sulur for more than a year following a quarrel with her husband. She would leave her four-year-old son with her parents when she left for work every morning, said the police.

On Friday morning Latha did not come out of her house for a long time and her neighbor Rani found smoke coming out of the house. When she called Latha and there was no response, she went inside the house to see Latha’s burnt body lying inside the bedroom. DCP S.Laxmi said that Latha’s dress was found in the front room and seven sovereigns of gold jewels kept inside the house were missing, though her gold earrings were intact. Chili powder was found spilled near the front door.
