Kerala: New action plan for gang-rape case
Thrissur: A definite action plan has been chalked out to conduct a fresh inquiry into the alleged Wadakkanchery gang rape, Palakkad town ASP G. Poonguzhali, who heads the newly-constituted special investigation team, has said. Speaking after holding a meeting of the team at Thrissur Police Club on Saturday, she said she would hold a proper inquiry and was going through the files of the previous investigation conducted Peraman-galam CI M. V. Manika-ndan. “I have taken charge, and at this point, I cannot reveal anything more,” she said.
She later met Thrissur Range IG M. R. Ajith Kumar and held discussions about the plan of action. Police sources said the four men facing allegations, including CPM's Wadakkanchery municipal councillor P. N. Jayanthan, will only be questioned after recording a detailed statement anew from the complainant, who is presently staying in Thiruvananthapuram under police protection.
As there will be no medical evidence for the alleged gang rape that occurred in the last week of May in 2014, the investigation will be more focused on circumstantial evidence which could be substantiated in the court of law. Meanwhile, city police commissioner J. Himendranath said Palakkad Superintendent of Police Srinivas A. was conducting an inquiry into the alleged lapses of Peramangalam CI after receiving the complaint on August 13, and the alleged ill-treatment of the woman was within the purview of this investigation. “This inquiry will decide if disciplinary actions needed against the CI for allegedly ill-treating the complainant,” he told reporters.
