Woman ends life, blames dowry harrassment

Hyderabad: Allegedly harassed for additional dowry, a 22-year-old B. Kavitha died by suicide at their rented house in Katedan under Mailardevpally Police Station of Cyberabad on Thursday. Kavitha and B. Chandrashekar got married in November 2022.

Kavitha’s brother Golla Yaganti in his complaint to police said that at the time of marriage, they gave Rs 10 lakh cash, gold weighing 15 tolas and house articles as dowry. Chandrashekar was working in an oil company and Kavitha was at home.

Two months into the marriage, Chandrashekar started harassing her physically and mentally. Yaganti said that Kavitha found Chandrashekar was having an affair with another woman and when questioned, he tortured her. He also demanded additional dowry of Rs 20 lakh to leave the woman.

When she informed her family about the demand for additional dowry, they arranged Rs 5 lakh, but Chandrashekar continued harassing her for more dowry.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, Kavitha called Yaganti over the phone and told that she was tortured by her husband and disconnected the call abruptly. Later on Wednesday, Chandrashekar called up Yaganti and informed that Kavitha died by suicide.

Mailardevpally police registered a case under charges of dowry death and detained Chandrashekar for questioning. Further investigation is in process, they said.
