Hyderabad: Girl, 19, ends life as cop harasses her

Mom raised alarm, but it was in vain.

Hyderabad: Mandala Shyamala, a 19-year-old graduate, set herself ablaze at her home in Yacharam on Monday, after allegedly being continuously harassed over four years, by a police constable who is married with two children.

Police have said that the girl succumbed to her injuries while being shifted to the hospital. A case for abetment to suicide along with charges under Prevention of Atrocities against SC&ST Act have been registered against Soma Narsimha.

Shyamala, from Dharmannaguda village, had completed her graduation and lived at home with her parents. For the past four years, one Soma Narsimha who is working as an Armed Reserve Constable and deputed at the Central Police Lines in Amberpet, had been harassing her and had also proposed to her. But she had refused his proposal.

As Narsimha was already married with two children, her parents had warned him to stay away from her. But Narsimha paid no heed to the warning and continued to harass her.

On Monday at around 11.45 am she got a call from the accused Narsimha and immediately after the call was disconnected, she ran into a room, locked it and set herself ablaze. “Her mother who noticed her engulfed in flames, raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed her to hospital, where doctors declared her dead,” inspector K Chandrakumar said. The police registered a case against Soma Narsimha who is absconding. A hunt has been launched to nab him.
