Cyber gang dupes Hyderabad tech student, Rs 24 lakh gone

Police said this incident shows how even tech-savvy youths are vulnerable to online frauds.

Karimnagar: Vodnala Sai Teja, a B.Tech first year student from Ramagundam, fell for an email that he received on April 27, stating that he had won GBP 2.50 lakh (nearly Rs 2.42 crore) in a lucky draw held by the Chevrolet Automobile Company of UK.

By borrowing money from relatives, he deposited Rs 24 lakh in accounts suggested by the senders. Police said this incident shows how even tech-savvy youths are vulnerable to online frauds. Engineering students are easily falling prey to Nigerian fraudsters. They are responding to mails sent by the frauds,” said a police official.

Cops say that the Nigerians are targeting students who frequent the Internet. “Once you respond to their mail, you will get a call and then voice calls through Gmail, Facebook etc,” explained the official.

Police officials said the Nigerians were earning Rs 10 lakh by duping Internet users a day. Recently, a student from Hyderabad deposited Rs 30,000, after falling into their trap.

The Nigerian frauds, camping in New Delhi, are experts in IT. They are locals by offering 2 per cent commission on each withdrawal of cash paid by victims. They are also taking the help of some people in UP and Haryana in order to access bank accounts.
