Telangana: Drunk drivers now control traffic flow
Hyderabad: Drunk drivers are now assisting the Hyderabad police to control traffic on busy roads. As per a court order 35 people were asked to assist the police in traffic management and create awareness among motorists.
A police official said that ‘community service’ will help drunk drivers learn their primary responsibilities as commuters. Around 100 people were caught for drunk driving during the weekend in south zone. They were produced before a court in Nampally and the magistrate ordered 35 offenders to spend five hours on the road helping traffic cops. Others were asked to pay fines.
“They were deployed at three junctions in Koti, Mozamjahi Market and near the Assembly. They had to control traffic and persuade bikers and motorists to wear helmets and seatbelts. They also assisted a head constable in his duties,” said a police officer. Sources said the magistrate wanted the drunk drivers to be on the road under the scorching sun as punishment.
“The offenders would also understand how difficult it is for the traffic police to do their duty in summer,” said an official. Higher police officials said the number of drunk drivers have come down recently as most people are aware about the repercussions.
