Hyderabad: 29, 000 booked for drunk driving in 2018

Chargesheets were filed against 27,383 people and 5,441 of them were imprisoned.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad traffic police booked as many as 29,484 people for drunk driving in 2018, of which 191 are women.

Chargesheets were filed against 27,383 people and 5,441 of them were imprisoned. An additional 1,424 people had their licences permanently cancelled or suspended.

The Courts imposed a fine of Rs 5,88,99,500 on the remaining 25,959 traffic violators. All those sentenced for imprisonment were sent to Chanchalguda jail.

In addition to drunk and drive cases, 129 were jailed for violations like jumping signal, not stopping at the zebra crossing, 212 for using cell phone while driving, 401 for driving without licence, 42 for minor driving, 19 for dangerous driving, and 11 for other M.V. Act violations.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Anil Kumar said, “The respondents caught and convicted for drunk driving and other cases may find it difficult to get government jobs, passports and visa clearances. The violators were also counselled at the Traffic Training Institute in Goshamahal and Begumpet.
