Vijayapura: Seven laborers lost their lives when a maize storage structure at Rajguru Foods in the Industrial area of Aliabad in Vijayapura collapsed on Monday evening around 5 pm.
All the deceased laborers are from Bihar.
Deputy Commissioner T Bhoobalan, accompanied by SP Rishikesh Sonawane, swiftly rushed to the spot to supervise the rescue operation.
"The laborers were working inside the unit when the storage structure collapsed on them. The laborers were trapped inside," DC Bhoobalan informed reporters.
The industry, involved in purchasing, storing, and packaging maize for sale, employs approximately 40-50 workers and also hires contract laborers based on requirements. When the pillar of the structure collapsed, laborers attempted to escape, with most succeeding, but unfortunately, some remained trapped.
Local authorities, including police officials, fire personnel, and City Corporation teams, promptly initiated rescue operations upon receiving the distress call. Teams from SDRF and NRDF were also deployed for assistance. The district administration confirmed seven fatalities, with the rescue operation continuing until Tuesday afternoon.
The victims were identified as Rambhit (36), Rajesh Mukhiya (20), Shambhu Mukhiya (40), Ramabalaka (40), Luko Yadhav (55), Krishna Kumar Mukhiya (18), and Dhulachand Mukhiya (33).
Large and Medium Industries Minister and Vijayapura district in-charge MB Patil rushed to the spot on Monday night, overseeing rescue efforts. He visited the spot and the hospital on Tuesday.
Patil announced compensation of Rs 7 lakh for the deceased's families (Rs 5 lakh from the unit owner and Rs 2 lakh from the government), and Rs 50 thousand for the injured laborer.
He emphasized the implementation of additional safety measures in industries to prevent such disasters and assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible. An FIR has already been registered.
"All the deceased laborers were from Bihar. Their mortal remains will be sent to Patna via Belagavi or Kalaburagi airport. Arrangements have been made to deliver the bodies to the families after consultation with the respective district collectors," Minister Patil added.
