Hyderabad: Sweta Rani, a 27-year-old mother, poisoned her five-month-old son and then committed suicide by hanging herself in Kulsumpura on Monday. She decided to take the extreme step because she was being harassed by her in-laws.

Sweta married Tapan Kumar in April 2016 and was blessed with a baby boy soon after. “After the marriage, Tapan Kumar, his uncle Shravan Kumar, and his mother Jyoti started harassing Sweta over petty domestic issues and demanded a dowry,” said M. Ram Mohan Rao, the Inspector of Kulsumpura.
Unable to bear the harassment any longer, Sweta decided to kill herself and her infant.

“On Monday afternoon, Tapan found the body of his wife hanging from the ceiling and the body of his baby lying on the bed and approached the police station,” said the Inspector.

The bodies were shifted to the Osmania University morgue for postmortem examinations.

The police booked cases against Tapan and his family under Sections 302 (murder), 306 (abetment of suicide), and 498 (A) (husband or a relative of the husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC, based on the complaint filed by Sweta’s father Kamal Kumar. Tapan Kumar, Shravan Kumar and Jyoti were taken into custody by the police.
