Rajahmundry: A woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Polavaram right main canal at Monduru village of Pedavegi mandal in West Godavari in the early hours on Wednesday as she was unable to bear the severe stomach pain for the last few days.
According to Pedavegi police, Midde Rama Lakshmi, 50 was suffering from severe stomach pain for the last four to five days. Her family members took her to a hospital and was given medicines. However, she failed to get any relief. She was also reportedly mentally retarded.
On Wednesday morning, she was found missing at her home by her husband Subba Rao who works as a farm labourer. He started looking for her in the village and found her sitting on Polavaram RMC bund. He approached her to persuade her to return home. However, she jumped into the canal to avoid him. The man also jumped in to rescue her. Local villages came to his rescue and pulled him out of the canal with the help of a rope. By that time, she had drowned. Police booked a case and investigation is on.
