Bank asked to repay account holder Rs 65 lakh

Gangopadhyay’s vision is partially affected and his wife is visually challenged

HYDERABAD: The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directed the State Bank of India, Balkampet, to reimburse Rs 63 lakh to a retired IAS officer, Biresh Chandra Gangopadhyay, 92, and his wife Arati, 86, for making online transactions from their bank accounts without their knowledge.

The couple, residents of Ameerpet, had filed a petition before the forum. Gangopadhyay’s vision is partially affected and his wife is visually challenged. He worked as secretary to the undivided AP government and as Union secretary.

On April 4, 2019, Gangopadhyay found that the balance was Rs 3 lakh instead of Rs 28 lakh in his joint account. He found unauthorised transactions were done online while his joint account was not approved for internet banking activity.

Bank officials held the couple responsible for online transactions. Police have registered a case and it is still pending.
