Hyderabad: Five Nigerians held for fraud

The two got the money transferred in the name of customs, foreign exchange and RBI formalities.

Hyderabad: The cyber crime unit of Hyderabad arrested five Nigerians and two Indians in the last two weeks in connection with a cyber cheating case in Delhi.

In the first incident, the police arrested Nigerians Nasoki Amos Williams and Ibrahim Iduh and Indians Paras Grovar and Karan Kumar Jha, both residents of Delhi, on Wednesday for cheating people in the name of a cancer medicine named ‘Opdivo’.

Nasoki Amos Williams and Ibrahim were friends who came to Delhi and they listed a fake company named JB Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd on Indiamart.com.

The victim had a friend, one Linda, in China who informed him that she urgently needed a particular cancer medicine which was not available there.

The victim visited Indiamart.com and found the contact number of the Nigerians who supplied the medicine Opdivo and contacted its representative, Marcus Garret, who promised to send the medicine if an advance payment of 30 per cent of its price was paid. The victim ordered 20 bottles and the price quoted was Rs 67,264 each.

Marcus said that once he receives payment he would dispatch the medicine through his agent by flight from Mumbai to New Delhi. Believing him, the victim deposited Rs 3.99 lakh, and later he went to Delhi in vain to receive the medicine.

After registering a case with cyber crime police inspector Karan Kumar Jha was arrested in Delhi and as per leads given by him the team arrested the others.

In the second incident, on July 29, the marketing intelligence team of CCS arrested two more Nigerians, Ike Chukwvnonso and Azubuike, who cheated a person of Rs 9.3 lakh on the pretext of sending her a gift from London by contacting her through Facebook chat. The two got the money transferred in the name of customs, foreign exchange and RBI formalities.

On July 24, police arrested Pius, a Nigerian and one Hari Singh Khatter, who cheated many in the name of marriage on jeevansathi.com.
