Mumbai teen kills self for missing college admission date
Mumbai: Failing to submit an admission form to a college and missing the deadline for it by a day pushed a teenager to commit suicide on Thursday. Durgesh Taipan,16, the teenager concerned, had scored 44 per cent in the recently-concluded SSC examinations.
A resident of Bandra, Taipan — who wanted to graduate in commerce — had decided to pursue the commerce stream for junior college. He had applied to nearly 30 colleges in the city for the same.
“He had been short-listed in colleges such as Dadar Vidyamandir and Junior and New English Junior College. But he had no clue about this since the process is online and he did not know about the final admission date,” said an officer from Nirmal Nagar police station. Sources said that the teenager did not receive any intimation of the final admission date, which fell on July 28, on his email or mobile phone.
“When he went to the said colleges on July 29, he was told that he had missed the last date. They asked him to apply again and submit a fresh application even though the fault lay with them for not notifying the candidate about the last date for admission,” said a police officer.
A dejected Taipan reached home and then hanged himself with his sister’s dupatta.
His mother found his body around 7.45 pm on Wednesday, after he did not leave his room for a long time. The police, who sent the body for medical examinations, confirmed that he had died due to asphyxiation and the Nirmal Nagar police registered a case of accidental death.
In a similar case, a 16-year-old girl had earlier hanged herself using a nylon rope after having failed to get admission into a college of her choice.
“The minor had got admission in Veer Savarkar College, but she wanted to go to Ambedkar College. Her parents informed us that she was under severe stress because of this and that could be the reason she decided to end her life,” said B. Jadhav, senior police inspector, Shivaji Nagar police station.
