Theft on rise in rural Kozhikode
KOZHIKODE: The rural areas of the district, especially Kuttiady, was facing the threat of thieves for the last one month. Residents say nearly 20 attempts of burglary and theft were reported in the areas like Kulangarat-hazha, Narikkoottumchal, Mokeri and Naduppoyil. Even the ‘Karma Samithis’ formed by residents with the assistance of the police is not helping the situation.
Even after the samithis started guarding residential premises during night, thefts are continuing, says the police. They suspect migrant labourers and question nearly 60 people a day at the station. On Saturday, two shops opposite to the police station were looted.
“We have prepared the sketches of people, according to the statements of the residents in the area. It is a real challenge now, as even after forming the special committees and mobile patrolling units and bike patrolling, the burglaries are taking place,” said sub-inspector A. Sayooj Kumar.
A dog squad visited the area and collected evidence from various houses in Mokeri the other day. After the theft, the thieves leave the suitcases on the road, said the police. The thieves are also smart enough to identify houses that are vacant for days and target them, they said.
