Chennai: Accounting firm executive detained

Car rams into security guard's cabin.

Chennai: A 26-year-old executive of an accounting firm was detained after his car fatally ran over a 58-year old security guard in the city on Friday night.

The accident occurred when he was taking the car out from an apartment complex on Annanagar Second Avenue, allegedly in an inebriated condition.

The deceased was identified as Mahesh Kumar of Alpur town, Parbalpur, Bihar, who is a watchman in the complex for the last two years. The executive was identified as Yuvaraj (26), a native of Namakkal, who works in the accounting firm functioning from the II floor of the complex. Both used to stay in the same complex. Twelve families reside in the apartment.

According to eyewitnesses, Yuvaraj and his friends had a booze party since Friday afternoon and became noisy as time went on. The crowd was getting ready to leave for dinner when the accident occurred.

Yuvaraj, who was behind the wheel, lost control while taking the car out of the parking lot and drove it through the cabin where Mahesh was resting.

“The noise caught the attention of neighbours who came to rescue Mahesh Kumar only to find he was dead. They alerted police. The body was moved to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

Subsequently, Yuvaraj was subjected to alcohol test at a government hospital and the medical examination confirmed the presence of alcohol in his blood. A certificate to this effect had also been issued. We booked him on charges of culpable homicide under section 304 (II) IPC”, said a senior police official who is privy to investigation.

The watchman was making arrangements for his daughter’s wedding scheduled in July. He was to leave the city by June 15. He had left behind some petty cash in a cover marked with his daughter’s name, Priyanka Kumari. His wife, Phulwa Devi; son, Dananjeyan, had come down to collect the body.

“My husband had been striving here for about a decade. He earned Rs 20,000 per month of which he would send us Rs 15,000. He was planning a grand wedding for our daughter. Now, we have to call off the wedding,” Phulwa Devi told DC.
