Coimbatore: As many as 165 persons were arrested near Pollachi for using narcotics at an illegal resort party near Sethumadai, late on Friday night.
Police said, before even the ripples of the Pollachi sex scam could die down, another shocking issue has shot up its ugly head. Police tumbled upon a major drug and narcotic abuse racket at a resort near Pollachi, and arrested over 165 students who were found to be intoxicated and noisy.
An illegal resort had been functioning for the past four years near Sethumadai - Anna Nagar, 15 kms away from Anamalai, close to the forest fringe area. After receiving hefty bribes, local police and forest department officials chose to close their eyes to this nuisance, without taking necessary action.
On Friday night, around 159 college students and youths had assembled at the resort. They had an illegal rave party spiced with liquor and narcotics, in which many of them were allegedly found to be using ganja, heroine, cocaine, narcotic tablets, intravenous drugs, sedatives and also liquor. Most of the youths were from neighbouring Kerala.
The incident came to light after a quarrel erupted between two groups at the dance floor around 2 am on Saturday. They revelers started to attack each other and the loud noise woke up local residents who rushed to the spot to find several youths in drunken brawl.
The locals alerted rural SP Sujith Kumar about the illegal resort and the happenings there.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, SP Sujith, without alerting the local police, personally jumped into action. He along with two special teams from Tirupur and Mettupalayam rushed to the spot and arrested the entire gang, including the resort owner, Ganesan. As many as 165 persons were arrested, of which 159 were youths and students. They were made to stay in a local community hall near Anamalai, and are being questioned.
