Tamil Nadu: Truck with Rs 2 crore medicine hijacked

Police said the incident happened around 4 pm on Thursday when truck driver Sekhar, 40, stopped his vehicle.

Chennai: In daring day light robbery, an armed gang posing as government officials, hijacked a city bound truck carrying 26 barrels of ashtma medicines worth Rs 2 crore after inflicting cut injuries on driver and gunman on Thursday evening near Sunguvachatriam bypass on Bengaluru - Chennai road in neighbouring Kancheepuram district.

Police said the incident happened around 4 pm on Thursday when truck driver Sekhar, 40, stopped his vehicle after being intercepted by the gang traveling in a Bolero jeep.

“The gang members initially acted like they were government officials checking the documents but suddenly they attacked gunman Venkitesan, 38 and driver with sickles before hijacking the truck. The empty truck was later found a place called Mapedu, 8 km away from the scene of hijack. Police believe that gang could have used another truck and shifted all the barrels of medicine, belonging to Malladi Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, to another truck and escaped”.

The large quantity of medicine was on its way from the company's production facility on Ranipet in Vellore to Chennai when the incident happened. Kancheepuram SP Santhosh Hadimani had rushed to the scene and conducted investigation.
