Bengaluru: A marriage party of seven friends who were travelling from Bengaluru to Sagar in Shivamogga district to attend a friend's wedding, died in a horrific car crash on Wednesday midnight at Muddinakoppa Tree Park near Tyavarekoppa, 10 km from Shivamogga.

All the seven occupants were crushed to death after the car they were travelling in collided with a lorry loaded with timber logs from behind. The impact of the crash was such that half of the car got jammed in the lorry. It took around three hours for fire force officials to cut through the vehicle to extricate the bodies.

On Wednesday evening, all the seven friends left Bengaluru in an Innova car to attend their friend Venkatesh’s wedding which was scheduled for Thursday. They were only a few kilometres away from the destination when the fatal car accident happened.

One of the causes of the accident, police said, was overspeeding of the car and absence of reflectors on the back side of the lorry. “With no reflectors at the back, there was no way the driver of the car could have noticed the lorry in front. As it was an uphill road, the car driver could not judge the speed of the lorry as he approached it,” the police told Deccan Chronicle.
