KOCHI: An attempt to loot the ATM of the State Bank of India's Paingottoor branch at Pothanikkad near Muvattupuzha was made in the early hours of Monday.

According to police, two unidentified men wearing helmets tried to break open the machine using an iron rod around 4.15 a.m. However, they could not reach the part of the machine where money was kept. Pothanikkad police, quoting bank officials, said that the money was safe.

"The gang applied Fevicol on the CCTV camera. Though they managed to open the primary door of the machine, they abandoned the attempt as they failed to break the number lock to the cash chamber which contained around Rs.25 lakh. A probe is on to trace them," an official said. The local people alerted the police around 6.30 a.m. A police team led by Muvattupuzha DySP, a forensic team and a dog squad examined the spot and collected evidence. The police registered a case and launched a probe.
