Chennai: Three years after a 60-year-old home-alone woman was murdered in Porur, police arrested the prime suspect in the case with the help of an anonymous letter they received on Saturday.
The arrested person was identified as Arockia Selvam (40) of Tuticorin. He had reportedly blurted out his role in the murder at a TASMAC outlet, which led to the information leak, police sources said.
A special team commissioned by Ambattur Deputy Commissioner, Sarvesh Raj was probing pending cases when they received the input in the case.
On May 28, 2015, three men posing as water purifier sellers gained entry into a house in Lakshmi Nagar extension in Porur and attacked two elderly home-alone women. One of them, Glory was murdered while her niece, Sarala escaped with injuries.
Glory was tied up and gagged using cellophane tape by the gang and the niece, Shanthi alias Sarala, who had come to visit her aunt was also attacked. SRMC police registered a case and began investigations.
Police investigations revealed that Glory had moved into the neighbourhood only two months before then. Meanwhile, almost three years after the murder, police cracked the case with the help of the anonymous letter. During interrogation, Arockia Selvam confessed to the crime after which he was arrested.
Investigations revealed that he already had a kidnap and dowry case pending against him. He was working as a call taxi driver in 2015 when he committed the murder and he quit the job soon after. Arockia Selvam was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
