Head injuries main cause of deaths in accidents across Andhra Pradesh
Vijayawada: Head injuries were the main cause of death in road accidents and hence the police and transport department were conducting awareness programmes targeting youngsters. The love of parents in giving vehicles to children without them having driving licences was contributing to road accidents.
Dr Ch. Srinivas said that two-wheeler accidents were the main causes of deaths and injuries during road accidents.
He added that in about 80 per cent of fatal accidents among two-wheelers, head injury was the cause as most of them drive bikes without helmets.
“Skull fractures intracranial haemorrhages, multiple injuries and brain injuries are frequent in two-wheeler accidents and in many of these cases, victims die within six to eight hours due to serious injuries,” he said.
Dr K. Ravi said that since head injuries were the leading cause of death, the teaching curriculum of schools and colleges should include safety measures to be taken while riding a two-wheeler. He added that separate lanes for slowly moving and high-speed vehicles and separate paths for pedestrians must be established on all roads to restrain two-wheelers from plying on high-speed lanes.
Motor vehicle inspector V. Srinivas has made several short films on road safety including on the importance of wearing helmets. He underlined the need for parents to inculcate the habit of wearing a helmet to their children while driving bikes.
Driving instructor Sk. Basha pointed out that when a brake was applied to a bike travelling at a speed of 80-90 kms, the vehicle would come to a stop only after travelling 35 to 30 metres. In such a situation, the bike would skid or ram a vehicle on the rear/side/opposite and therefore youth should be educated about this, he said.
