40-year imprisonment for Kochu Paul murder

Court said parole could be granted to convict only after 20 years

KOCHI: The accused in the sensational Irinjalakuda Thumboor Kochu Paul Murder case Vadakkumcherry Thomas alias Tony was sentenced to 40 years of imprisonment by Thrissur Principal District Sessions Judge Annie John on Thursday.. Thomas, who is the son of Kochu Paul’s sister, on November 15, 2011, hacked him to death while he was sleeping and decamped with 45-gram gold he had kept under his pillow.

The court said in the judgment that considering the heinous nation of the crime, parole could be granted to the convict, who is presently 53 years old, only after twenty years, public prosecutor Pious Mathew told DC. The victim was staying alone in Thumboor when he was murdered. The prosecution presented 29 witnesses, 87 documental and 15 pieces of material evidence before the court.

"The convict will be spending the rest of his life in jail," the prosecutor said. The accomplice of Thomas aka Tony, 19-year-old Kanjoor Kanjirathingal Martin of Ernakulam, had turned approver. Circle-inspector T.S. Sinoj conducted the investigation and submitted the charge sheet. Bibil Ramesh was also part of the prosecution.
