Bengaluru: Middle aged couple killed in crash, grandkid survives

Their six-year-old granddaughter who was on the bike had a miraculous escape and suffered only minor injuries.

Bengaluru: A middle aged couple, who were returning from a hospital after getting their granddaughter treated, were crushed to death after their scooter came under a bus on Sirsi Circle Flyover on Mysuru Road near Nalanda Theatre early on Tuesday morning,.

Their six-year-old granddaughter who was on the bike had a miraculous escape and suffered only minor injuries.

The deceased, Anthony Joseph (55) and his wife Sagai Mary (52), residents of Jagjivan Ram Nagar, were travelling along with their granddaughter on a Honda Activa scooter when the accident occurred.

The couple had taken their ailing granddaughter to St. Martha’s hospital on Nrupatunga Road around 11.30 pm on Monday night and were heading back home around 1.45 am on Tuesday.

As they were crossing the Sirsi Circle Flyover, a Tamil Nadu government bus, bearing the registration number TN-29-N-2540 that was allegedly being driven recklessly, hit the scooter from behind.

The couple fell to their right and the bus ran over them, killing them on the spot. The girl escaped as she fell on the left side of the road and sustained minor injuries.

The bus driver stopped the bus immediately and fled the spot fearing public ire. The Chickpete traffic police, who reached the spot, shifted the injured girl to a hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were sent to Victoria Hospital for postmortem.

The Chickpete traffic police have registered a case and are looking for the accused driver.

Rs 3 lakh relief announced
Chamrajpet MLA B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan has announced Rs 3 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased couple.

They were residents of Jagjivan Ram Nagar, the area that falls under Mr Khan's constituency.
