Lack of security structures made museum theft easy

The police officials suspect that persons known to the museum authorities are likely to have committed the theft.

Hyderabad: Poor security at the Nizam Museum allowed the thieves to make away with priceless artefacts, Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar said. He inspected the museum along with Cyber Crime staff, Clues team, Task Force officials and the law and order police. “The security arrangements were very casual and lacked alarms, proper CCTV cameras and basic safety measures which made it easy for the men to decamp with the valuables. We are closely following the clues and investigating the case,” said Mr Kumar who spent nearly two hours examining the place along with other officials.

The police officials suspect that persons known to the museum authorities are likely to have committed the theft. The value of the stolen items will be known once the curator examines the place. “We have deployed 10 teams in the vicinity and went to the museum with dog squad, Clues team and Task Force officials,” said ACP, Mirchowk, B. Anand. “We have checked the CCTV footage of the place but nothing was recorded as the thieves turned the cameras away,” said another official.

Clues team find iron rod left by thieves

The men who stole the valuables from the Nizam Museum left behind an iron rod which was used to break open the glass around the artefacts, an official from the Clues Team of the Hyderabad Cyber Crimes Police told this newspaper.

“We suspect that it was a two-man job, as one of them held the rope for the other one to climb down with the loot,” said Dr Venkanna, scientific officer and head of the Clues Team. The team recovered a few other clues from the museum and the terrace where the thieves are believed to have landed. “We are processing what we could recover and the results will be handed over to the investigating officials,” the officer said.
